Nutraceuticals are moving from the niche into the mainstream. At Ocean Spray ITG, our recent partnership with Artemis International means that our industry acumen and over 65 years of cranberry research are now complemented by the product expertise of a leader in the nutraceuticals field.
What are nutraceuticals?
Nutraceuticals are bioactive compounds with properties beneficial to health beyond basic nutrition. They are often concentrated extracts from fruits, herbs, seeds, specific lipids and vegetables and can be used to fortify products to create functional foods, or taken as supplements1. Each ingredient is associated with proven or potential health benefits2.
Wonder berry
Many fruit ingredients are popular in the nutraceuticals category due to their naturally high content of vitamins and nutrients that can be used to boost the health properties of various food, beverage and dietary supplement products. The unique A-type proanthocyanidins (PACs) contained in cranberries have an ‘anti-adhesion’ mechanism, which can prevent certain harmful bacteria from attaching to the cell lining of the urinary tract and may inhibit bacterial infection. Consumers and manufacturers are also becoming increasingly aware of the role cranberry can play in promoting whole body health and wellness, including heart and gut health.
Our cranberry 90MX powder and cranberry extract powder are ideal for dairy, beverage and confectionery applications, adding nutritional fortification to everyday staples or indulgent products. Our cranberry extract powder delivers ≥ 1.5 percent of bioactive PACs supplying the required minimum 36mg of cranberry PACs that may “help reduce the adhesion of certain E. coli bacteria to the urinary tract walls”3.
The future’s bright
